Site Credits: The origin of this project goes back to 1990 with the development of the ICONS Project and the first DOS version of the software was developed in Clipper in early 1991. For their early faith and support of the project over more than a decade, great appreciation goes out to Bill Harp and Preston Hardison (co-programmers of ICONS) and Julian Inglis who were early visionaries about the need to develop indigenously-based communication networks and indigenous information and communication technology (IICT). The ICONS Project had the good fortune to connect with Alejandro Argmedo, Fred Fortier, Jannie Lasimbang, Aroha Mead, and Dave Moore who had formed an indigenous communications committee within the indigenous caucus at the 2nd Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Jakarta in 1994. This became the Indigenous Biodiversity Information Network (IBIN). This effort has benefited enormously from the assistance of IIFB members Esther Camac, Crescencio Resendiz-Hernandez, Lucy Mulenkei, Tamara Dionne-Stout, and indigenous supporters such as Patricia Borraz, Miriam Ann Frank, Helen Leake, and Paul Oldham. Dana Guppy of First Mile Services, who has provided support for the development and hosting of this site. Dana has supported indigenous rights for over two decades. First, as director of the Fourth World Resource Center, where he provided a place for Seattle citizens to learn about and get involved in furthering indigenous rights. In the last decade he has provided web services for the Indigenous Biodiversty Information Network (IBIN). The overall design of this site is Dana's work. Terry Williams of the Tulalip Tribes and the Cultural Stories became involved in the initiative during the 3rd Conference of the Parties in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has had a constant vision of the need to use traditional knowledge to provide guidance to our collective future, and the need to establish indigenous communication networks to reinforce indigenous self-governance.
